Renewal of Vows

The Renewal of Vows ceremony is a personal choice. Often people choose to use this ceremony either as a celebration of many happy years together; or when they have experience a challenging event that has effected them and their marriage deeply, to the point they feel it is important to renew. It is illegal in Australia to participate in a marriage ceremony if you are already legally married, even if to the same person. It must be clear to all that a renewal of vows is purely a ceremonial ritual, and not a marriage ceremony.

There is no given format for Renewal of Vows ceremonies. Often it is similar to a wedding but cannot be the same as it would be an offence by Australian law.
Example of renewal:
▪ Walking down the aisle together or escorted by children
▪ Welcome by Celebrant – stating that this is a renewal of vows
▪ The couple’s and/or family’s special story – speak of when the couple were married, and why it is significant now to them to renew their vows.
▪ Readings
▪ The Asking – speak of past asking and renewal – if required
▪ Exchanging Vows – speak of past vows and renewal
▪ Ring ceremony – speak of past exchange and now renewal
▪ Rituals and Blessings
▪ Signing the Renewal Vow Certificate
▪ Presenting the Renewal Vow Certificate
▪ Conclusion
