Yoga Relaxation

What is Relaxation?  Some would say a holiday – but often the holiday is so hectic, you need a holiday to get over the holiday.  Other ways to relax, for some, might be to smoke, drink or use drugs; the trouble is all these create a false sense of relaxation.

What is the difference between, just relaxation and yoga relaxation?  When you are stressed your body is in “distress” and yoga relaxation can release that stress.  Yoga relaxation gives the whole body a time out, and releases tension from physiological cause and psychological factors.  Yoga relaxation is for everyone and everyone can benefit, no matter what your age or ability.

The suggested position in yoga is the corpse pose, but relaxation can be mastered in the seated position.  It takes practice.  Make the time.

Three Yogic Techniques that Sharon has taught since 1990:

One.  Instant 2min – Exhale – Release all tension :-: Inhale – Tense face and neck :-: Exhale – Tense shoulders, arms, hands, chest and stomach :-: Inhale – Tense feet, legs and buttocks :-: EXHALE – Relax

Two.  Quick 5mins

A cycle of breathe is an exhalation and an inhalation.  Begin ten cycles of normal breath, then ten cycles of deep full diaphragmatic breath, and finishing with ten cycles of deep breathing saying to yourself as you exhale RELAX, and as you inhale ENERGISE.  Stretch and open and close the chest.

Three.  Deep Relaxation 10-20mins (Yoga Nidra is deep relaxation.  After deep relaxation you will feel refreshed, and may feel like you have slept for hours, even though it was only 20mins.)

Relax the whole body – part by part – Begin by saying to yourself toes relaxing – letting go – etc., feet, calves, knees, thighs, buttocks, pelvic, abdominal organs and muscles, chest, fingers, hands, arms, shoulders, neck, facial muscles – where the mind goes, the energy flows.
