The Fool – new beginnings

April fool where did it come from??  According to web sources, which I would take with a grain of salt 😉 it is a mystery as to where the day or the words came from.  A possible source is 15th century France when the Georgian calendar changed New Year from April to January.  Now that is a big change and new beginning.

The fool in the tarot represents new beginnings, and an innocence in that beginning.  Every set of cards has a different picture to celebrate the fool.  It is a major arcana, which means it is a significant influence, and represents the number 0.  Just to give the idea of the variety of Tarot Decks and the interpretation, here are just five examples:

(Photo 1) In Doreen Virtue and Radleigh Valentine’s Angel Tarot Cards (2012), they renamed it “the Dreamer”, which does give it a softer feel of a new and exciting phase.

(Photo 2) Also in their Archangel Power Tarot Cards (2013), they renamed it “Leap of Faith”, which again has a similar feel, and is softer to “the Fool”.

(Photo 3) The Native American Tarot, (Magda and J.A. Gonzalez 1982) based on Native American symbolism and folklore, still has named the card “the Fool” and it is a kachina which in Hopi means spirit, a kachina clown.  The zero is still there and I love the words “the void that is the source of all things”.  In this card they draw the connection between foolishness and holiness; madman and prophet.  The innocence being creative light.

(Photo 4) The Osho Zen Tarot (Osho 1994) The transcendental game of Zen, also chose to remain with “the Fool” and 0.  In this set of card it is spoken from a “Zen sense”.  This card is not about “rational” but the intuition. Letting whatever happens happen and then let it go.  The fool “his trust is so pure that nobody can corrupt it” and “he carries nothing more than his purity, innocence and trust”.

(Photo 5) In John Holland’s Psychic Tarot, (2007&9) he also renames to “New Beginnings”, and unlike all the previous has a woman standing on the world with a staff.  This is about the journey of the “first step”, “new adventure”, “choices”, it is not about conform, and is about “fresh eyes“, “give yourself  permission to live, play, love and above all, laugh”.
